Western medicine and Chinese doctors understand the kidneys differently. One has a focus on the function of the kidney as an organ, the other views the kidney as a part of a whole that provides many functions within the whole.
Western doctors know that kidneys are responsible for fluid balance, waste elimination, regulation of blood pH and mineral balance. In addition they play an important role in red blood cell production, blood pressure regulation and turning vitamin D to its active form, calcitriol. Its a fat that our kidneys are essential for life.
Kidney dysfunction often isn’t noticed with symptoms until the condition is well into its advancement. Many symptoms of kidneys not working to full potential seem like normal health hassles and can be viewed as normal in the course of everyday life as you will see as we disscusss them further.
The first symptom of kidney dysfunction is a change in the frequency and amount of urine passed as well as a change in color such as darkness. According to Dr. Avinash Ignatius, senior consultant nephrologist DaVita, Pune Region,
” Frequent urination at night is one of the most common early symptoms of chronic kidney disease and it should not be ignored even hough it appears to be harmless. Other symptoms of the disease usually develop when kidneys have lost approximately 80% of their function.”
Other symptoms such as pain while urinating, blood in the urine, foamy urine, swelling or edema, extreme fatigue, anemia, generalized weakness, dizziness and difficulty concentrating. Cold hands and feet, cold back, and always feeling cold are also common primary symptoms of kidney disease. Severe kidney disease can create a build up of fluid in the lungs. Anemia ( a common side effect of kidney disease ) starves the body of oxygen causing shortness of breath. exhaustion can cause one to preform shallow breathing, as opposed to abdominal breathing, which does not allow the energy and oxygen to reach down to touch the kidneys.
Common indicator of kidney dysfunction is severe pain. Everyone has a different pain tolerance level and some may not suffer
to the degree of another. The pain is characteristic in the back and sides along with severe cramping that spreads from the lower back to the groin area. Depleted kidneys show signs that include a sore weak lower back, knees, ankles, bone & tooth problems and premature graying or thinning of the hair. Thyroid problems or extreme reaction to climate such as feeling super cold or having lots of hot flashes can also indicate the kidneys are not in balance. Edema, kidney stones constant urination throughout the night suggest a problem with the water metabolism function of the kidney and urinary bladder.
Kidney energy can be inherited as low from birth and can be depleated with age. Kidneys in particular are subjected to exhaustion due to factors like a hard driven lifestyle, overworking due to consumptions, insufficient water intake, chronic illness, stress and multiple pregnancies. Age itself plays a role in kidney energy also. By the average age of 40 declining kidney energy can begin to effect the overall health of the body and soul. If left unchecked this lacking of kidney energy can manifest as infertility, menopause, sexual dysfunction, andropause, prostate problems, impaired immunity, chronic inflammation, high blood pressure, heart irregularities, anxiety, loss of physical drive in general, and poor concentration.
As stated earlier, Western physiology and anatomy limits its description of the kidney as the actual independent organ itself. Chinese medicine defines the kidneys as more than just an organ but a group of functions. As one of the main functions being the root of energy for the entire body. Chinese physiological theories focus on the function of the kidney more than just the form. The word kidney in Chinese medicine is honored with a capital ‘K” to denote the organ-meridian system.
Kidney is important to the source of the bodies inherited energy and is regarded as the organ-meridian that governs the structural integrity and function of not only the kidney itself but also the adrenal glands, ovaries, testes, brain, spinal cord, skeletal structure, ( particular to the lumbar region), teeth, anus, urethra, and the inner ear. The kidney system also governs hormones, adrenals, sex glands, reproduction as well as growth and the faculty of will power! Do you have the pain free energy to just get going?
The energy elements of the kidneys may not be surprising when the system is looked at as a whole.
The element found in nature associated with the kidneys is water. which is appropriate and symbolic because water is the source of all life. The emotional components of the kidney system are creativity and sexuality. The kidney as an organ governs survival through reproduction and physical fight or flight responses. The kidney system is responsible for libido and strength of physical attraction. The emotions associated with the kidneys are fear and fright. Fear as you may know, has the ability to shake you to your core and maybe even cause you to “pee your pants”.
In western medicine its known that the adrenal glands pump out adrenaline ( stress hormones ) and are located right next to the kidneys. Chronic fright is unrelenting stress that is extremely damaging to the kidneys. The other organ paired with the kidney is the Urinary Bladder. Together both these organs govern water metabolism in the body. Water is the source of life and energy so it is appropriate that proper hydration is vital to the kidney and health of its entire system as a whole.
Many of us endure mild dehydration over sustained periods of time in our course of life. Low energy and shortness of breath along with cramping of tissue are common symptoms of dehydration. Several glasses of water provide the body with almost instant relief from these symptoms. Add sodium bicarbonate and the response is even greater.
Dr. Norman Shealy says, ” Every known illness is associated with a magnesium deficiency” and that ” magnesium is the most critical mineral required for electrical stability of every cell in the body. A magnesium deficiency may be responsible for more diseases than any other nutrient.” The benefits of drinking water are greatly amplified when water contains high amounts of magnesium and bicarbonates.
Magnesium controls the fate of calcium in the body.
When magnesium is introduced to the body calcium dissolves and becomes more water- soluble. This occurs in the blood stream, heart, brain, and all the tissues in the body. Not enough magnesium to keep calcium dissolved creates calcium-excess muscle spasms, fibromyalgia, hardening of the arteries and also dental cavities. Calcium and magnesium levels and intake of them, matter largely in the health of the whole system; in which the kidney system bares the weight of.
To much calcium in the kidneys and not enough magnesium to dissolve it creates painful kidney stones. Insufficient magnesium levels cause calcium to be deposited in the soft tissues such as , kidneys, arteries, joints, and the brain. Calcium intakes above 2.6 grams daily may reduce the uptake and use of magnesium by the body therefore excessive calcium intake increases the bodies magnesium requirements.
Damage can be caused to the kidney by magnesium deficiencies. This damage actually causes magnesium waist in the body. Micropuncture studies have shown that most active renal tubular reabsorption of magnesium occurs at the sites that are potentially damaged by magnesium deficiencies. The kidneys dump excess nutrients from the blood that the body does not need or cannot process in that moment. Magnesium deficiency studies show that intraluminal calcareous deposits in the corticomedullary area and the damage to the tubular epithelium. In simple terms kidney damage from magnesium deficiency creates a negative feedback loop that intensifies magnesium deficits.
Deficiency that creates damage and further deficiency sounds hopeless. Fear not, remember that could hurt your kidneys!
Natural remedies exist for Kidney disease. Remedy meaning to heal, fix and/or provide solution. One of the nicest treatment for the kidney is done with magnesium oil. This oil is applied transdermally and is just as soothing as a massage. This treatment along with a few others discussed further on can prove to be more than a joy to endure. Like the pleasure of a spa that cleanses stress and grime away; the transdermal therapy is not invasive, painful, inconvenient, or costly with negative side effects.
With this oil, a spa treatment is something you can actually perform independently in your home as part of your daily hygiene self-care routine. Remembering that water is life we include it to the transdermal treatment. Adding magnesium (pure Epsom salts) to your bath not only washes away oils and stress, it contributes to the whole health of the system as it is absorbed transdermally.
We said that adding bicarbonate to a glass of water can cause a tired soar body to respond positively almost instantly. Baking soda ingested with water may sounds like a yuck plan only grandma would suggest, however Sodium Bicarbonate is one of the most basic medicines we have for kidney disease. New research by British scientists at the Royal London Hospital shows that sodium bicarbonate can dramatically slow the process of chronic kidney disease.
Dr. SK Hariachar is a nephrologist who oversees the Renal Hypertension Unit in Tampa, Florida. Dr. SK Hariachar saw the research on bicarbonate and kidney disease and stated ” I’m glad to see confirmation of what we have known for so long. I have been treating my patients with bicarbonate for many years in attempts to delay the need for dialysis, and now we finally have legitimate study to back us up. Not only that, we have the added information that some people already on dialysis can reverse their condition with the use of sodium bicarbonate”.
Oral administration of sodium bicarbonate diminishes the severity of the changes produced by uranium in the kidneys. Military manuals suggest doses or infusions of sodium bicarbonate to help alkalinize the urine if uranium contaminates the kidneys. This makes the uranium less kidney-toxic. It also promotes excretion of the nontoxic uranium-carbonate complex. Sodium bicarbonate is one of the few medicines that helps when there is radiation contamination; as is also Medical Marijuana.
Medical Marijuana ( you don’t need to smoke it ) and other natural Herbal Medicine that treats, protects and promotes health of the kidneys can be found in a future article. These Herbal Medicines applied as a whole in the daily hygiene routine and consumption plan provide comforting, positive life energy, that promotes healthy healing without invasions of negative side effects. Often trusting in something as simple as several glasses of water, an oil massage and a warm bath can seem like not enough. Implement this practice and make it a part of your daily lifestyle. A short cycle of disciplined time later you will know if further extremes are needed such as the Herbal Medicine you can find discussed in a future article titled Heavens Healthy Healing Herbal Solutions for Kidney Disease.
